“Reading is a Miracle”: Literacy Experiences of Youth Deprived of Their Liberty
Main Article Content
Abstract
Literacy studies have proven to be valuable for problematizing the uses of reading and writing in contexts that fall outside conventional educational frameworks. In this regard, the present research article aims to understand the experiences related to literacy practices among a group of young people held in a juvenile detention center in Colombia. A qualitative methodological approach was used, based on a dialectical hermeneutic method, and semi-structured interviews were employed as the data collection technique. The results indicate that the disruption of educational processes is a central feature in the life trajectories of these young people, and that their relationship with reading and writing is marked by significant challenges.
